Lesson From A Patient Starling

(I have been thinking about Spring, as I view the snow from the past weekend's storm slowly melting, taking its time. The following post was originally written on May 20, 2015 and I thought it would make a nice repost to remind me that Spring is surely coming!)

For the past few days, I've been hearing a sound somewhat like a rusty hinge screeching a flat chord. That's the best way I could describe it! I looked outside my open bedroom window and watched as starlings were marching up and down in the grass and weeds of our front yard, busily searching for tasty cuisine. I was still puzzled as to what was going on with that sound and how it connected to what I was witnessing in the front. It wasn't until I was later at the kitchen window, watching several birds at the feeder that it all became clear. While I was standing there, a mother starling and three fully grown and dull colored juvenile starlings landed over several of the feeders hanging from the pole. The noise was being made by each of the juveniles, while mom instantly became busy picking up food and popping it into the nearest open beak. The juveniles jostled together as they rustled their wings repeatedly, screeching in that same key, and shoving one another aside so they could be the one to be fed next. Once in a while, one of the juveniles would peck at something himself, or fly down to inspect the bird bath, but those forays didn't last too long. Over the next several days, I have witnessed this again and again and marveled at the mother's patience. When mom flew off, they flew off, and when mom came back, there they were, barely a feather's space between them.

Starlings aren't the only birds which display this behavior - cardinals, finches, bluebirds and several other breeds do it as well. Cardinals seem to have the least amount of patience though, I've seen a female cardinal peck a juvenile on the head a time or two when she was tired of being bothered. Bluebird fledglings stay on a tree branch, and the parent will fly back and forth from the meal worm feeder, stuffing their beaks. They all start chirping when the parent heads toward them. The dad will continue this even while mom sits on a new brood. When that brood hatches and then fledges, the birds from the earlier brood will assist their parents in bringing food to the new fledglings.

It's a scene repeated each spring, and has been going on since creation. The mature birds help their offspring and their nurture hasn't ended at the nest. Most of us experience some of that from our parents, and even some mammals do as well. It's an encouragement to me to see these age old routines played out at this time of year. What a reassurance that whatever craziness is going on in parts of the world, the normal order of things has not been broken. And it reminds me to be willing to be helpful to not only family members, but to other artists, of whatever creativity they are into. We don't live alone as hermits, and even if I don't practice a certain kind of art, I can be encouraging to its creator. After all, my Creator encourages me daily from what I see and enjoy in nature.

Enjoy your life one day at a time!

Coming Up For Air

What a tumultuous past three weeks! On May 29, 2 days after I wrote the last blog, our precious friend, our dog Taylor, died during the night unexpectedly. She was 11, but we thought we had a few more years with her. Our other dog Abby was with her when she passed, and I think that has helped her deal with it, but we have all been grieving.

I had an appointment in Charlotte with the specialist, an appointment a couple of days later with my GP for a routine checkup and also in the same week, an appointment with the acupuncturist. It's taken me some time to recover from the trip to Charlotte, and while there, he diagnosed me with another issue to add to my long list - heart problems. However, they are being dealt with quite well with another medicine.

I have been trying to paint some more in a class I have been taking which includes a new product I am finding great fun to use, but I have not felt very much like painting till recently. More on that another day, with pictures.

I have been trying to market my art, and that has taken effort to look at the options and figure out the best direction to go. And with a tired mind, it's been slow, since I have spent a good bit of time resting.

I also started a 6 week workshop doing something completely different for me - playing with clay! I will share more with you about that in the upcoming days, again with pictures. Both this workshop and the other class are more or less up to me to schedule - the videos have all been done and I can view them and work according to my energy level.

I have also had some neat experiences with the birds in the area, especially with the Sharp Shinned Hawk, who likes to pluck birds from our feeders. He's come very close to the house, in fact in one instance he was sitting on the porch eyeing a small bird in the shrubbery, right outside the dining room window as I was eating lunch. I was able to enjoy an up close examination of him, and he (or she) is so beautiful. Thankfully he did not get the bird or that may have ruined my lunch!

Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I have not skipped out on my blog, and I will bring more details to you in the coming days!

Ta-Daaa!!

I have been wanting to make some prints of some of my art work to put in my Etsy store and I finally was able to finish 4. I actually did 3 earlier, and learned an awful lot, it's not as easy as it may seem! So we kept those bird prints, and I made another set of them and also one other thing. I'm still learning!

These are on boards, with black trim so that they are ready to hang. It takes time to prepare the cradlewood boards for painting - the back needs to be taped off with painters tape so it won't spatter onto other areas, a layer of gesso has to go on and dry, then you paint the black on. The print is made on a special paper and adhered so that there is a line  of black showing around the edges. They are ready to hang, no framing needed!

I have them for sale now in my Etsy Art Store. We are hanging the original set of bird prints in John's office. Nothing's really moving in the Art Store yet, but I don't have a whole lot in it and that's OK. It will get there. I'm pleased to be able to have this part done, and plan to make more prints. I hope and pray to be able to paint more in the days ahead!

Well Hello World!

So it's been two months since I posted, and it was a pleasure to hear from some folks that they wondered what happened, and was hoping I'd be back. I'll try to sum up what's been going on for me in the past two months.

January was a pretty good month for me health wise, comparatively. For some time I had been considering opening a store on Etsy so that I could begin to get rid of the things that I still had left from my antiques business. When I had to close it in 2008, I tried to get rid of as much stuff as I could, but there is still enough lying around to warrant trying to sell it off. With my daughter's help, I opened BelleSouth Mercantile, and began to add items to the store.  After some urging from some of my friends to sell my art, I also opened a shop for just that - BelleSouth Studio. I have been blessed with actually selling some things from the first store, but I have not had the time to really put much on the second one, or to do anything really new except for a couple of things. Those who have read my blog before know about the Spoon situation, but those that don't can read about it here. To put it simply, I was using up all of the spoons I had available everyday, and that is not a good thing. So in February, my body laid me out with a relapse, and although I still was able to do some things, I had to take it easier with myself than I had before.

Now it is March, and I am still not back to where I was in January. I am doing a little bit, and marshaling my time better. I even tried some new things with art, going in a different direction that I had before. Here is what I've done:

I call these the Worldly Birds. (You have to go to my art store to see why!) They are done on 6 x 8 flat canvases. It was hard to get a really good shot of them, but they are for sale. I have enlarged them and made prints mounted on wood, and they turned out pretty cool, but I haven't taken shots of them yet. Some of my other pieces will also be for sale and I plan to do some new ones as I have the strength. I also am selling postcards!

I also have some on there that were experiments that I couldn't let go to waste, and so I'm selling them as a grab bag. These pictured here were close ups of my texture piece called The Old Mine. And I have a variety of others I will be selling.

So, I really hope to be back blogging on a much more regular basis, and I would be thrilled if you go to my stores, and "follow" and "favorite" my stores. And hey, if you want to buy something I would not mind that at all!! :) And of you have an constructive comments, please let me know!

Glad to be back!!
