Christmas Gift

I promised I would show what I gave to my sister on Christmas Day and so here it is:

Purple Prose

My sister loves purple, and I could not remember what else (and I didn't want to ask), so it's purple plus a few other colors. My husband really liked it and said that it had sort of a Asian relief map feel to it. I painted some rice paper with old Japanese writing on it, adhered those to the acrylic painted canvas. I collaged with other papers and postage stamps, and then used Golden bead gel, Golden crackle medium, origami netting, waxed cording, ceramic bead points from Italy, and Interference Violet paint to create the sheen effect. It's on a 12 x 12 wrapped canvas, and also includes oil pastels, Stabilo pencils, and a handful of violet micro beads. And she loved it! I'm so glad it turned out to her liking. This is the second mixed media piece I've done as a gift and therefore in specific colors. A lot of love goes into my paintings!

New Art

Although it has been an up and down time, I have joyfully been able to spend some time in my studio, although never for long periods. Even so, I am working on some art pieces and have 2 to show you. The first is another of the postcards of which I had shown you a series of before, this is a new one from that series. And the second is a mixed media collage on canvas.

Poppy Pods

This mixed media collage is on a 10 x 10 wrapped canvas. It includes a transfer image of poppy pods, collage of old book pages & tissue, hand drawn poppy pod, acrylic paint, oil pastels and Stabilo pencils. 

And I have one more I am still working on.

Another Collage Postcard

The reason I do a lot of postcard art is because with this illness, it's a lot shorter timewise to create a postcard, so I can still have the joy of creating, and yet go back and lie down! But I miss making bigger things, so I have started a painting which I've wanted to do, but have been putting off. For right now, here is the latest postcard for you to enjoy!

Mixed media includes collaged tissue strips, various paper bits, acrylic paint, rubber stamping, part of a lace doily, texture strip, stabilo pencils oil pastels, and then the top images and gems. The original postcard was a black and white advertising card. The texture strip is something found in the sewing notions, but I forget exactly what it was. The bird is a Dresden Scrap, as it was originally published in the 1930's. 

While I was on the porch photographing this, I could hear a storm coming, so I tried a few shots of the sky and clouds, and even took a couple of shots of one of the 6 hanging baskets we have on the front porch.

AngelWings Begonias, Petunias, Sweet Potato Vine and I don't know the name of the really small leafed hanging plant on the left.

Dance My Child

Another journal page, playing with gesso, scraps, acrylic paints, oil pastels, old image, ribbon and Stabilo pencils in a collage. This may or may not be finished, I'm not sure!

Weather is much more humid today, and I guess that it should be expected - after all we are in the South! I will be glad when the Grackles stop overpowering the bird feeders - I know they are feeding babies, but they are such bullies and take so much! The Bluebird eggs have hatched in the standing birdhouse and they look so helpless. The parents are very protective of them. We have a chipmunk living in the rock pile near the birdhouse and when the chipmunk scampered out, the Bluebird parents started dive bombing the poor thing, even though he is not the least interested in the babies! 

And life goes on!

Pink Birds Postcard

I have had really up and down days, but I wanted to be doing something so I tried something new with this postcard. The background is collaged dark green paper, then I put a wash over it. Next I used a stencil to put Bead Gel in the shape of birds. After that dried, I painted them, sketched in a few leaves and the outline of mountains. Mixed media with paper, acrylic paints, bead gel, Stabilo pencils, oil pastels.

These birds live in the high mountains of an imaginary country, 

somewhere far, far away. 

And this postcard goes in the mail tomorrow.

Asian Fish

Another collage, this time with shapes attached before painting, and then a few afterwards, for the Complex Collage workshop.

12 x 12 wrapped canvas; I found some fish images in a Dover book, drew one on deli wrap paper, attached with gel gloss, and painted; then attached a rectangular print out at the bottom. Mixed Media, with acrylics, Stabilo pencils, Micron pens, matte gel, stencils, oil pastels. 

Funny how when you are doing this, it takes a life of its own. When I am creating art, I forget about the illness and all of its limitations. Then I stare at it - wow, this came from my hands? Thank you, Lord!

Afterwards, though, I usually pay. But it's so worth it!

Old Piece of Metal

Well, actually, it's not! In this texture workshop, we have a limited palette we are using, which is why you are seeing the same colors in the last few projects. Done on 8 x 10 canvas board, the first layer is collage papers and other bits attached with matte gel medium, then layers of paint, oil pastels and Stabilo pencil. I was thinking this looks like an old piece of metal, such as pressed tin, which had been lying in a ditch for years, and had weedy roots adhered to it. What do you think?
