New Art

Although it has been an up and down time, I have joyfully been able to spend some time in my studio, although never for long periods. Even so, I am working on some art pieces and have 2 to show you. The first is another of the postcards of which I had shown you a series of before, this is a new one from that series. And the second is a mixed media collage on canvas.

Poppy Pods

This mixed media collage is on a 10 x 10 wrapped canvas. It includes a transfer image of poppy pods, collage of old book pages & tissue, hand drawn poppy pod, acrylic paint, oil pastels and Stabilo pencils. 

And I have one more I am still working on.

They Wait

I finished another artwork. Actually this is the second one, I did another one with a different focus, and I really disliked it after it was finished. But I learned some things and a good coat of gesso over the canvas and it can start anew. No, I won't show it! (I know just who would say that!) So, here is the second one.

On a 12 x 12 wrapped canvas, this is a collage/mixed media piece. The tree and photo were transferred; the tree was a bit tricky for transferring and I ended up painting most of it in. There's some soft texture and running and pooling of paint. I also used oil pastels.

Taoist Fairy

I finished my media/collage painting.

Until I found this image, I didn't know that Japanese literature included fairies. She always has her deer in attendance.

The image is a color transfer, and other images are transferred and then collaged on top of the transfer. Background is acrylic paint with oil pastels. I also included tiny Italian square ceramic beads, paper flowers and 3 tiny rolled scrolls. It's on 12 x 12 wrapped gallery canvas. Enjoy!

La Grande Soeur

For some reason, Blogger dumped my post and I'm trying again. The post was erased but the comment I had received was still there. ??? Go figure.

Today I worked on a journal page using some of the vintage papers my husband had given me as a birthday gift a few weeks ago. After laying it out and then gluing down the papers, I realized that my original plan was not going to work, and since the vintage image was already glued down, I had to immediately think of another approach. Many artists have a saying about "happy accidents" and that's what this was for me. Having those kinds of accidents or mistakes really gives you good experience and deepens the learning process.

In the first go-round, I had layered vintage French dictionary pages, and the vintage image and applied paint. The image was too far up on the paper (what was I thinking?) to work well, and so I began to look at what else I could use and yet not lose my focus point. I tore yellow tissue paper into strips, layering them on with soft gel medium. I added paper flowers, and punched some smaller flowers out of the left over papers. I added more paint, some texture with pieces of grouting tape, layered some more, added a moth transfer and then made liberal use of my oil pastels. I am pleased with this journey, and now I tell myself of course I meant to put the image that high! The name translates into "The Big Sister" and you can see it at the bottom of the page. Happy accidents - gotta love them as an artist!

Lately people have been telling me that I should sell some of my work, but I don't know. I put so much attention and work into them that they become a bit like my children.

But, I'm still thinking about it!

Joy Ride - Piece Finished

Tuesday I shared the "before" of a mixed media art piece, now here is the finish:

The bicycle is a gel transfer I made from a postcard I received; I copied and reversed it so that it would come out in the direction I wanted. I added some molding paste with stencils  for the flower and the dots in the upper right corner. Material used include oil pastel crayons, scraps of old book pages, acrylic paint, micron pen, ink, and a bit of Stickles.
